Australian social media holidays that should exist in 2023

2023 is in full swing and we’ve already got our creative caps on developing social media plans for our clients. When it comes to post inspiration, referencing your brand’s content pillars is key, but sometimes we need to have a little fun and share in the spirit of social media holidays.

Let’s face it: there’s no shortage of weird and wonderful occasions to commemorate across the year. But in an age where trends rise and fall in a matter of hours, finding relevant days to engage with can be difficult. There’s only so many options to share on World Emoji Day after all!

A new year necessitates new ideas–and it’s about time we switch things up with a few fresh holiday additions. For your consideration, here are the social media holidays we think SHOULD exist in 2023:

Lean Into Luxury Day

You know what? I’ll say it: self-care is just not enough anymore. After a whirlwind start to this decade, we all need a day to go above and beyond face masks and bubble baths. Cost of living be damned, we want Real Housewives-level excess: champagne, streaming marathons, dramatic feathered robes & far too much brie.

Gather your crew or fly solo for 24 hours of sharing pure self-indulgence. Treat yo’ self!

Top 8 Day

Picture this: it’s a Wednesday afternoon and you’ve finally wrangled control of the household PC. MSN Messenger online, Limewire queue filled with questionable music downloads, you log in to MySpace.com only to find–*gasp*–you’ve been demoted to 9th place on your bestie’s friends list.

To this day, nothing has ever quite instilled that same piercing fear into our hearts. Perhaps we’ve grown too bold, too consumed by our quest for large follower counts. Perhaps we should be humbled once more.

Ready yourselves for some difficult conversations, everyone; it’s time to rank your Top 8 friends and let the petty chaos ensue.

Aussie Iconic Foods Day

An unadulterated celebration of all that truly makes Australia home: fairy bread, Bunnings sausages, the highbrow “charcuterie” selection of kabana, ever-so-slightly sweaty cheese cubes & more. Our national holidays are generally just an excuse for this anyway, so why not lean into it for one more?

Get ya Jatz out, dip into the Sweet Chili Philly and share the FruChocs around the office. Just don’t ask your New Zealand friends about the origin of lamingtons.

“Ugly” Website Day

In a world dominated by click-and-drag website builders, let’s show some appreciation for the true greats of web design: the cluttered, half-broken HTML sites buried in the depths of cyberspace.

Whether it’s showcasing a classic example or crafting your own, there’s still so much to celebrate about these chaotic wonders of the world-wide web.

Get Dressed in the Dark Day

We’ve had enough carefully-planned casual Fridays; it’s time to truly challenge your inner fashionista. Switch the lights off, rummage through your wardrobe and head out the door–no mirror checks allowed!

One less decision to make in an already busy morning, and a great reminder to not worry quite so much about our appearances.

National Unsubscribe Day

Does your inbox instil dread every time you open it? Are the constant notifications of more newsletters, special offers and ‘we miss you’s driving you up the wall? Take this opportunity to save your sanity and smash that ‘Unsubscribe’ button!

Make your email enjoyable again by clearing out the unnecessary junk, focusing on keeping what’s most important to you. We might need a nationwide public holiday just to scrape the surface, but hey–’Inbox (0)’ feels pretty dang good.
